From The Doctors Corner – How To Beat Fleas This Summer!

Feel like you are losing the battle against fleas this summer? You are not alone. A lot of our clients are struggling this season. With so many flea products on the market these days it can be difficult to decide which one to use on your cat or dog. Your veterinarian is the best person to discuss what product will work best for your pet. Not all flea products are created equal!

People often think that flea products create a shield around your pet where no flea can enter. This is not true. Each product kills the fleas in a different way and in a different amount of time. Some products don’t kill fleas at all and instead prevent them from reproducing only. If you see a few fleas on your pet there are likely hundreds more lurking in the environment. It is essential to treat your yard, house, and pet bedding if you want to win the battle against fleas. You may wish to work with an exterminator to determine which products are effective but safe to be used around pets and how often they need to be used.

In today’s economy it can be very tempting to try the over the counter flea powders, drops, dips, and collars because they can be less expensive than prescription flea medication. Be careful, these products are often ineffective and dangerous to your pet. Adverse reactions can range from minor to life threatening and include skin irritation, vomiting, muscle tremors, seizures, and respiratory failure.

Fleas are not only a nuisance to you and your pets, but they also cause serious health risks. Fleas can cause flea allergic dermatitis, anemia, tapeworms, and red-blood cell infections in your pets as well as cat scratch fever and typhus in people. At your next visit please discuss flea control with your veterinarian so you and your pets can be happy and healthy this summer!
